A new book, Active Transportation Planning Beyond the Greenbelt: The Outer Ring of the Greater Golden Horseshoe Region, profiles 13 wide-ranging projects that have improved conditions for walking and cycling in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. One of the lead investigators of the book is Raktim Mitra, assistant professor with Ryerson University’s School of Urban and Regional Planning and Co-Director of the TransForm Laboratory. The municipalities featured in the publication have successfully implemented off-road trails, paved shoulders, bike lanes, sidewalks and other projects to create spaces that encourage active transportation.
